The thirteen doors had names inscribed on tiny golden plaques. Alice could barely read them in the shimmering darkness. One by one, she confirmed the names of the Provinces and Territories of Canada. But, every plaque said, “State of” and not Province or Territory. State of Alberta, State of British Columbia, State of Manitoba, State of new Brunswick, State of Newfoundland and Labrador, State of the Northwest Territories, State of Nova Scotia, State of Nunavut, State of Ontario, State of Prince Edward Island, State of Quebec, State of Saskatchewan, State of Yukon.
“States!” cried Alice, “But when did this happen?”
